11th Street Brooklyn Townhouse

Originally constructed as a nondescript 3-unit apartment building, this project gave new life to this structure through the gut renovation into a single-family townhouse.  With a relatively long, narrow footprint, an early challenge was how to introduce more natural light into the interior.  An unconventional solution presented itself when it was determined that a good portion of the floor framing would need to be rebuilt.  This allowed an opportunity to create a slot along the perimeter wall opposite the stair and bring natural light into the middle third of the plan.  Rooms are arranged to occupy the full width of the house while a new bent steel and walnut stair connect the floors.
